So, I think it's time to introduce my own creature. It's the Nessyc from the New Galaxy, which never really got around to RP, so It's still a blank slate.
(Note, this is not a common Nessyc, infact no Nessyc would look like this, it's merely a way to show most of the possible parts for the Nessyc. Read below for more information.)
Evolution:
The Nessyc evolved on a gas giant and started as little leech-like beings. Having neither the means to manipulate their environment nor sapience, they latched onto other organisms to live on them. However some time a species of Nessyc evolved, which, instead of latching onto other organisms, formed colonies. These colonies soon evolved more specialized individuals like ants do. By doing that they were so effective, that soon they replaced the entire ecosystem on the planet except for some symbiotic micro-organisms. However, they haven't gained sapience yet and for several millions of years their evolution seemed to stagnate while sub-ecosystems formed inside the Nessyc society. Thus the Nessyc were caught in animalistic unconsciousness until a new type of specialized Nessyc evolved. These Nessyc had a better nervous system, which was so advanced, that it worked like a brain. It didn't take long until these colonies with brains evolved more and more and subdued the enemy colonies. Soon the brains were so advanced, that together they formed some kind of intelligence and the Nessyc were ready to build a civilisation.
Biology:
The Nessyc are a very weird form of organisms. Instead of having a civilisation with several equal individuals working together, each single Nessyc is actually more like an organ or a tool bred purposely for its function. Over the time the different specialised individuals have been reduced to their very main function and Nessyc themselves now have become more like cells instead of being fully developed individuals. At first this doesn't seem very advantageous as the body itself is already composed of different cells, but the Nessyc can detach and attach parts at will and thus are very flexible. Many parts together form a so-called unit and could be easily mistaken for an individual, but really it's just several parts attached to each other making it very difficult to describe the Nessyc. Infact the line between unit and individual is blurred, so that the Nessyc only have a name for themselves in plural, because in their society there is no individual.
Mindset:
Originally the Nessyc followed a rather strange way of thinking. Their brains worked more like computers with no ability to create emotions. This meant, that even after they have proven their sapience, they were still disregarded as "animals" by some of the other civilisations. During this time Nessyc were neither kind nor aggressive, they were truly neutral to the other races saying honestly what they think. This of course created some tension between the Nessyc and other races, but it didn't take long that the Nessyc developed a way to "copy" the brain anatomy of other sapients (and non-sapients by the way). This was the point where the Nessyc as a united race existed for the last time: The different brain copies now had a sense of individuality, though mixed with the Nessyc hivemindset, and finally they created new subcultures of Nessyc each with its own goals and preferences. Of course these 'tribes' advanced their mindsets even further until they have become stereotypes of the different cultures. As if that wouldn't be confusing enough, some of those tribes breaked apart each creating its own individual mindset while others merged and thus even blurred the line between the different tribes.
Modern Nessyc:
While there are still hives left of the Nessyc that interact with the other races, the most well-known Nessyc are actually members of a new fad among the race. Some of them have acquired the taste of individuality and don't want to let go of it. These Nessyc are basically units made of different components, but their brain parts together form a brain which they will never split or merge with another Nessyc, except for really desperate times. These individuals are called "outcasts" by other races, even though they are not in a really hostile relationship with the hives. In fact they often serve as interpreters and ambassadors as the communication between a hivemind and a race based on individuals is often difficult. Some Outcasts even go as far as imitating biological restrictions of other races, such as aging. Of all the races the Nessyc are probably one of the most diverse, both psychologically and physically.
